このたび、弊社が開発した畳の椅子「TATAMiS Rotate」が、ウッドデザイン賞2026を受賞いたしました。

私たちが目指すのは、単に畳を現代の暮らしに取り入れることではなく、畳文化そのものを再構築し、次の時代へとつないでいくことです。

熊本のい草と九州産の桧、地域に受け継がれてきた素材と技術を活かし、伝統を現代の暮らしに合った新たな形へと進化させる。今回の受賞は、その可能性を広げる一歩だと考えています。

また、熊本県八代市でい草の生産と畳表づくりに取り組む「聖和表」の東家聖治さんには、今回のものづくりを支えていただき、心より感謝申し上げます。

これからも多くの方々とともに、畳の価値を見つめ直し、未来の暮らしに息づく畳文化を創造してまいります。

TATAMiS Rotateは、只今最終調整を行っており来年度に販売を予定しております。

TATAMiS Rotateは、回移転する背もたれによって自然に身体に寄り添う座り心地を生み出すと同時に木の高い加工性と安定した構造性を引き出した椅子です。座面には天然い草特有のさらりとした感触の国産畳、木部には地域産の桧を用い、地域素材を生かしながら、環境と文化の持続可能な循環を目指しています。

Announcement: Winner of the ‘Wood Design Award 2026’

We are delighted to announce that ‘TATAMiS Rotate’, a tatami chair developed by Maeda Tatami Shop, has been awarded the ‘Wood Design Award 2026’.

Our aim is not merely to incorporate tatami into modern living, but to reconstruct the culture of tatami itself and carry it forward into the next era.

By utilising igusa from Kumamoto and hinoki from Kyushu—materials and techniques passed down through the region—we are evolving tradition into new forms suited to contemporary living. We regard this award as the first step towards expanding that potential.

We would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Mr Seiji Toya of ‘Syowa Omote’, a company based in Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture, which specialises in igusa production and tatami mat weaving, for his support in bringing this product to fruition.

Moving forward, we shall continue to work with many people to re-evaluate the value of tatami and create a tatami culture that thrives in the lifestyle of the future.

TATAMiS Rotate is currently undergoing final adjustments, and we plan to launch it next fiscal year.
